We began working on the idea of a Just Transition for Southern Gippsland towards the end of 2019. The group was originally formed by members of Prom Area Climate Action.
In mind from the start was the question; how can the necessary transition to a low-carbon society, including our own region, be done in a way that addresses all the inequities and inequalities that define our fossil fuelled economy?
The focus is on the idea of a Just Transition, which we take as a general frame for the work that needs to be done. What that transition could look like, and how it might play out locally, remains, however, very much up for grabs.
You can follow the steps as we move along.
Third Step: Form Working Groups (still to come)
Southern Gippsland spans Bunurong and Gunai-Kurnai country. We acknowledge that this land is unceded and pay respects to Elders past, present and emerging. A just transition is one that allows for First Nations sovereignty.
